In the Tool Shed

The Tool Shed is a work in progress. It’s my resource page — a storeroom of resources and tools to use in enhancing your garden spot and lingering with the Lord as you seek to know Him better. I’ll be adding to it regularly – please come back often to explore!

Books

Trusting God by Jerry Bridges

This is one of my favorite books because it overflows with truth and comfort, reminding me “we are in the hands of a sovereign God who controls every circumstance of our lives and who rejoices in doing us good (Jeremiah 32:41). I’ve underlined and made notes, kept my copy close by, and turned to it many times. It is a great comfort in times of difficulty and uncertainty, and has helped me better my Lord and better understand His purposes in diversity. Bridges is a trusted author; his most well known book is The Pursuit of Holiness, which has sold over a million copies. A favorite passage says, “We must see our circumstances through God’s love, instead of as we are prone to do, seeing God’s love through our circumstances.”

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. Whitney

Upon first hearing of this book, I confess I wasn’t excited based on the title. I thought it sounded like drudgery – wow was I wrong! Whitney explains the spiritual disciplines, documents God’s purposes in them, and lays out the practicalities of application so well, that I was eager to study them and make them part of my life. He explains, “They are the habits of devotion and experiential Christianity that have been practiced by the people of God since Biblical times.” The disciplines he covers are Bible Intake, Prayer, Worship, Evangelism, Serving, Stewardship, Fasting, Silence and Solitude, Journaling, and Learning.

The Red Sea Rules: 10 God-Given Strategies for Difficult Times by Robert J. Morgan

This is a marvelous little book, with 10 truth-fueled strategies for difficult times. Taken from Exodus 14, Morgan draws on lessons from the story of the Israelites when they’re stuck between the Egyptians and the Red Sea. Filled with encouragement, it includes many Scripture references, quotes, and real-life stories. This book was really helpful in reducing my fears in seemingly impossible times and helped grow my trust and confidence in the Lord, who makes a way for His children. Each chapter ends with four study questions, and a Study Guide is also available. Learn more about this book here, as well as others Morgan has authored.

All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew

I have what must have been the first edition of this book, and used it to start my first square foot garden over 25 years ago! It’s a great resource and was all I needed – well, aside from the rain and sunshine. I’ve had a garden every year since and am grateful for this find which gives detailed instructions. Later I purchased the second edition to incorporate updates. This newer third edition has color photos and graphics, so it’s visually appealing. Bartholomew covers the basics, plus how to plan your garden, lay it out, build the boxes, plant and maintain, and much more.
